Developing a Healthy Attitude to Competition

Tennis: Sunne konkurranseinstinkter

The fact that I have a master’s degree in Philosophy and Religion, have about 34 years of on-court tennis teaching experience and am the author of two books and numerous articles on the role of the mind in peak athletic performance does not, in my opinion, render me qualified to be a mental awareness facilitator.

However, I feel that the inner journey of exploration that I am presently on and have been totally committed to for the past over 30 years and my life-long passion for sports in general and tennis in particular have given me the personal experience to guide others along their own journey to fulfill their full athletic potential.

The wise have said that ‘where ever you go, there you are’, which means that what ever you do (playing tennis is one thing) is colored by who you are. Consequently, if one wishes to change how one does things, then some fundamental shift at the root of the individual must occur.

There are no quick fixes, short cuts or easy solutions here; however, the good news is that if you can experience the inner peace and serenity that leads to peak athletic performance on the tennis court, this state of being will affect every area of your life.

A major part of the ‘problem’ is that players are far too focused on the outer to relax and enjoy the competitive experience. By focusing more on the inner, it is possible to reach a place of balance where the inner and outer have been integrated. In this inner space, not only will players play to the best of their ability, but they will also be more able to enjoy the journey.

We have been operating the Wholistic Tennis Academy in Long Island, NY for the past 15 years where we have trained world-ranked players, college players, highly-ranked juniors and recreational juniors and adults. In addition, the past number of winters I have traveled extensively around Asia, including Australia, both coaching and presenting at conferences and for local and national tennis organizations.

SAMPLE LESSON

The lesson will begin with an introductory 15 minute conversation where the client will have the opportunity to share the details of the situation that needs to be dealt with.

Next, the client will be given a comprehensive Mental Awareness Questionnaire, which will need to be filled out in detail. The questionnaire involves answering almost 100 questions and the process of filling this out is part of the ‘solution’.

I will then respond with a general interpretation of the questionnaire and outline some of the specific ‘issues’ involved. In addition, I will suggest a general course of action to shed light on some of the ‘false beliefs’ that are invariably causing the stress or tension within the individual player. ‘False beliefs’ exist because they are unexamined, they strive on darkness, when light is shed on the false, the false automatically drops. Consequently, raising awareness is part of the process.

I will include some general on-court and off-court suggestions to give individuals the opportunity to remove the blocks that we ourselves create to stop us from fulfilling our athletic potential.
